In the summer of 2017, young Tibetan director Lhapal Gyal began shooting his debut feature film Wangza’s Rain Boots in Taga Village, Haidong Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai. Two months later, Tibetan director Pema Tseden started location scouting for his film Jinpa in Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai.
By filming Tibetan crew members from both productions — including actors, assistant directors, art assistants, and extras — the project offers a glimpse into the current state of filmmaking in Tibet. Structured in four chapters, it explores the origins of Tibetan filmmakers’ connection to cinema, their self-perception within the industry, their understanding of the medium itself, and their visions for the future.

This screening of Making movies on the Plateau is jointly presented by the 6th Fluctoplasma Festival for diversity in Hamburg and the German Association for Asian Art ( Deutscher Verein für Asiatische Kunst e. V.)
